Surgery

Surgery is something that is risky for both the surgeon and the patient. In Mothership 1e, Surgery is a Master level skill, and is treated the same as any other skill. This binary pass/fail method does not account for how the condition and mindset of a patient are also major influences on surgical outcomes. These rules present surgery as a more involved and complicated procedure.

Skills

Only players with the Surgery skill are able to attempt surgical rolls. Other players can attempt emergency medical care, but it takes training or assistance from someone with the Surgery skill to be able to attempt surgery.

Making a Roll

Surgery is simulated using an Opposed Roll. The surgeon makes either an Intellect or Speed Check depending on the situation. The patient makes a Body Save.

Advantage and Disadvantage

Surgery is dangerous, so it is better for everyone involved to work in the best possible setting, with available drugs and assistance.

A patient may gain Advantage by using an automed or stimpak before surgery. The surgeon may use a stimpak before surgery to gain Advantage. Other drugs may serve these purposes as well.

It is also possible for a player with the Surgery skill to remotely guide unskilled characters through simple procedures, but the character performing the operation makes all Checks at Disadvantage and receives no skill bonus. Unskilled character may act as an assistant to the surgeon, giving the surgeon Advantage.

Interpreting the Roll

The outcome of the surgery roll is determined using the table below. All results refer to consequences for the patient. The surgeon receives normal consequences for Failure (+1 Stress) and Critical Failure (+1 Stress, Panic Check). Critical results occur in addition to the Success or Failure except in the case of a patient Critical Success and a surgeon Failure and a patient Failure and a surgeon Critical Failure.
